This class will be a hybrid studio art / art history course spanning roughly from post-Impressionism to the present–about the time painting transitioned from a craft discipline largely of realist depiction to one grappling with the dawn of photography, industrialization, and the progression to abstraction. We will balance a historical view with studio work, exploring the various mark-making techniques that informed their respective moments in society and how that reflected a certain psychology of that moment. Painting has been declared “dead” on many occasions, so throughout the class we will explore its uncanny ability to revive and reinvent itself, all the way up to right now, when painting seems as open and flexible as it has ever been.
